Registering Palominos Australia Wide

The Golden Palomino

The Australian Palomino Horsebreeders Association was formed in 1948. It has come a Long way since the first stallion was registered.

Palominos today are proving that their golden colour is being rewarded with achievements being obtained at the highest levels in hacking, dressage, harness stock horse, western and individual breed type events.

                                      What is a Palomino

The Palomino is not a breed of horse.  It is a horse recognised by its golden coat..  A Palomino is defined as a saddle horse or pony type therefore may be a Quarter Horse, Part Arabian, Thoroughbred or of pony breeding, as long as it has that familiar golden coat.

To create a Palomino there is no cross breeding, only cross colouring.

The body coat colour should be of a newly minted gold coin, or three shades lighter or darker.

The mane and tail should be white, silver or ivory. The basic kin colour should be dark and both eyes dark.  Palomino must not have a dorsal stripe or zebra markings.

Controversy exists to the origin of the Palomino some suggest that their ultimate origin goes back to the ages of Homer 1200BC.  Others claim they were prized by Kings of Yemen.

In the 15th century Queen Isabella of Spain maintained a stable of golden Palominos.

The Palomino appears to have been rediscovered when the United States took possession of California in 1848.  Regardless of the origin today’s  Palominos can be found all over the world.
